Instructors
Guitar - Bob Margolin
Pinetop Perkins Foundation Board Member, Bob Margolin is active in today’s Blues
Scene, having won the Blues Music Award for guitar in 2008 and 2005. He played
in Muddy Waters’ band for seven years and has led his own band for 31 years. As
an educator, he has taught Blues Guitar workshops at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace
Ranch, has an instructional video on Muddy Waters’ guitar style, and has given
workshops at Blues Festivals and events worldwide.
This workshop will feature Bob playing live and recorded Deep Blues to inspire
the class, and follow their interests and contributions in the moment to
personalize the experience – sharing technique, attitude, and listening and
performing skills. The students should have a basic knowledge of guitar. We will
pursue Blues that sounds good, feels good, works with other players, thrills an
audience, and is both fun and deeply fulfilling for the player.
Harmonica - Gary Allegretto
Gary
Allegretto is a world-class harmonica player whose music and
performances have received widespread acclaim. His recordings have
received Grammy considerations, topped radio charts, and have been
featured on the soundtracks of film and television. In 2011, the
Blues Foundation awarded Gary their prestigious Keeping the Blues
Alive Award for his celebrated and extensive work as a Blues
educator. But perhaps most remarkable is the impact of Gary's
humanitarian work. Since 1985, through his nonprofit organization
Harmonikids, he has provided music therapy and harmonicas to many
thousands of children with a wide range of physical, emotional,
and/or economic disadvantages. His most challenging missions have
been with child survivors of the most devastating natural disasters,
including the tsunami in Indonesia, Katrina in New Orleans, and
earthquake in Haiti. While on tour with his band, Gary can also be
found working in local schools, festivals, hospitals, and with
at-risk youth. The joy and hope that he has brought to children
around the world are immeasurable.
The harmonica workshop addresses techniques and concepts to develop,
build and elaborate on the player's skills - including tone, style,
versatility, rhythm, dynamics, soloing, song crafting, and
performance strengthening.
Piano - Ann Rabson
Ann Rabson has been performing the blues
professionally since 1962. Ann has released three solo albums,
appeared on ten Saffire albums and as a side musician on many other
recordings, including the Pinetop Perkins Grammy nominated CD Ladies
Man. She has recently released an instructional video titled: Blues
and Barrelhouse Piano. Ann has participated in arts-in-education
programs since 2002. She has presented her programs and workshops on
blues to students in New York City, Ottawa, western New York State,
Pennsylvania, New Brunswick, Iowa, and Illinois. Ann has taught
workshops for several blues societies, as well as at Augusta
Heritage Center's Blues Week, the Fur Peace Ranch music camp, the
Summer Acoustic Music Workshops in New Hampshire, and the Port
Townsend Centrum workshop.
Ann was honored to teach at the first
Pinetop Perkins Piano Workshop in Clarksdale. This workshop explores
blues forms and elements on the piano including (but not limited to)
12 bar and 8 bar forms; blues rhythms (shuffles, boogie woogie,
rhumba); introductions; turnarounds; left hand grooves; moving
between chords; major and minor modes and various licks and tricks.
